One afternoon I sat at the kitchen bar waiting for my mother to get me a snack. She asked what I would like to eat and ended up offering me some pears from a can. The can had a pop top lid, which I peeled up. Not realizing how sharp the edge of the lid was, I handled it carelessly and cut my thumb around the inside of the knuckle. The circular cut felt deep and it immediately started bleeding.
Instinctively I grabbed a paper towel and wrapped it around my thumb. I think I was about eleven or twelve years old at the time and I didn’t understand anything about stopping the bleed. As I ate those sweet, delicious pears, the cut continued to bleed under the paper towel and when I was finished, I washed my thumb under the kitchen sink with soap and water. Presently, I cannot recall the details of the conversation with my mother regarding my thumb. It’s been about 30 years since this happened and I simply cannot remember those details.
What I recall next is that we had to leave to go somewhere, perhaps to run some errands. So I got into the car with my mother and younger brother. While seated in the backseat of the car I began to pray to God to heal my thumb.
I used a method of prayer I learned in Sunday School. It is not the only method that can be used for healing but it is the only method I knew at the time. The first thing I did was focus on God. My attention was turned to understanding that He is the only Creator, who is perfect, eternal, ever lasting, omnipotent, omnipresent and all powerful. Then I focused on the relation Man has with God, that I am His creation. He created me in His image and Likeness and as His perfect reflection, I am pure and true.
After this step, I then thought about the thumb I had sliced open. I affirmed myself as God’s creation and denied the belief that I was injured. I denied that I was anything less than God's perfect creation and I asked for my thumb to be restored. After doing this I reaffirmed the identity of Man, as God’s perfect creation. In Genesis Chapter 1 verse 26 (King James Version) it says, “And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness.” So, I reinforced this step by remembering how God created Man. The last step I took was to once again focus on God, and His perfection as the only Supreme Creator.
I repeated these five steps several more times with my eyes closed in the backseat of my mother’s car until I fell asleep. Yep, that’s right. I fell asleep in the car just like most kids fall asleep in their parent’s car while their parents drive across town. I estimate that I was asleep sometime between thirty to sixty minutes. Eventually we arrived at some location and I woke up.
I wanted to look at my thumb but was afraid it was still bleeding. I took off the paper towel that was wrapped around my thumb. The cut was gone. My thumb looked like it was new. There was no sign of a cut at all. There wasn’t any opening of skin or edges of skin, like one may see with a paper cut. Nothing. Zip. Zero. Zilch.
To this day, there’s no sign I was ever cut on my left thumb. Any perception of a cut disappeared during the ride in the backseat of the car that day. This was the first time I witnessed the healing power of God and it has been with me ever since. Over the course of my lifetime, it has inspired me to keep trying. I have had several other healings since then. Perhaps I will share them in future testimonies. I have grown spiritually and learned other methods of prayer, but I still use that method from time to time.
I encourage anyone reading this to pray regularly. I would encourage you to find a method that works for you. One of the ways I like to think of prayer is to compare it to a radio. The Divine frequency is always on and broadcasting, but you must tune your thoughts into it in order to hear it clearly. Each one of us is capable to hearing our own thoughts. Sometimes there are many of them. In order to hear God, the mind must be tuned and focused like a radio tuner tunes into a particular frequency to hear a station on the air.
When a radio is tuned in on a frequency it is filtering out all of the others. A tuned in station comes in clear without any static. When there’s static, the radio may be slightly off frequency or there may interference that needs to be filtered out. Prayer works the same way. One has to clear the mind and focus. The five steps I took when praying about my thumb achieved this. I focused on each thing before moving to the next and then I reinforced the process by repeating it. It’s simple and arguably crude, but it worked for me and now I’m here to share with you my first healing experience.
